EU asks Sri Lanka to find inclusive political solutionMay 19th, 2009 - 12:06 am ICT by IANS
Brussels, May 18 (IANS) The European Union (EU) Monday called on the Sri Lankan government to outline a clear strategy leading to an inclusive political solution in the island nation.
“The long-term security, post-conflict reconstruction and prosperity in Sri Lanka can only be achieved through such a process, to address the legitimate concerns of all Sri Lankan communities,” the EU foreign ministers said in a statement.
They urged the Sri Lankan government to take urgent steps to facilitate the evacuation of civilians from the conflict area. The statement apparently came before the Sri Lankan military Monday claimed victory over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The ministers also urged the government to immediately delivery humanitarian assistance to the affected population, EuAsiaNews reported.
The EU reiterated the need for all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian laws.
It called for the alleged violations of the humanitarian laws to be investigated through an independent inquiry and those accountable must be brought to justice, it stressed.
