Eriksson is Notts County’s new football director
July 23rd, 2009 - 2:37 pm ICT by IANSLondon, July 23 (IANS) Former England and Mexico manager Sven Goran Eriksson is the new director of football at League Two club Notts County.
The 61-year-old Swede, who had a brief stay at Manchester City, has signed a five-year contract worth two million pounds a year plus bonuses and a shareholding in the cub.
Eriksson insists he is not chasing money and had turned down some big offers after being sacked as the Mexico coach in April.
“I’m here for the challenge, not the money. If it was for the money I could have gone elsewhere to earn much more. This is the biggest football challenge in my life, to try to take Notts County to the Premier League. I started my playing career at this level so here we are again,” Eriksson was quoted as saying by The Sun.
“I always said that I wanted to come back to the Premier League because it’s the best league in the world. I’ve chosen a difficult way to do it but I am sure we will do it.”
The Swede added: “I know Notts County is the oldest League club in the world and that they were in the top division the year before the Premier League started.
“Maybe since then it hasn’t been that good but we want to change that. ”
Sven has brought along with him his long-time assistant Tord Grip while Ian McParland will remain in charge of team affairs.
