Elizabeth II becomes second-longest reigning British monarch
May 12th, 2011 - 6:31 pm ICT by IANSLondon, May 12 (IANS) Queen Elizabeth II Thursday became the second-longest reigning British monarch in 1,000 years.
The queen has been on the throne for 59 years and 110 days, a day longer than George III, the Daily Express reported.
Queen Victoria reigned for the longest period - 63 years.
Elizabeth II - full name Elizabeth Alexandra Mary - was born on April 21, 1926, to King George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.
She was educated privately at home. Her father, George VI, became the British king in 1936. In 1947, Elizabeth married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. They have four children - Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward.
