Ecuador to continue fighting Colombian rebelsMarch 7th, 2008 - 6:13 pm ICT by admin
Quito, March 7 (Xinhua) Ecuador has said that it would continue to fight Colombian rebel groups operating in the country although it has cut diplomatic ties with Colombia. The Ecuador army would not allow foreign rebel groups to enter the country and would continue to crack down on the Colombian rebels operating in Ecuador, including the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a senior officer said Thursday.
The army has destroyed 117 FARC camps and hideouts, captured 14 rebels and seized a large amount of arms and ammunition since 2004, he said.
The remarks came just days after Ecuador severed ties with Colombia following its cross-border raid on FARC rebels, which killed 21 rebels, including the group’s second-in-command Raul Reyes.
The raid has ignited regional tensions as Ecuador and Venezuela have sent troops to their borders with Colombia.
