May 1st, 2009 - 4:26 pm ICT by IANSAmsterdam, May 1 (DPA) The driver of the car which sped into a crowd watching the Dutch Queen Beatrix, killing five bystanders, has died in a hospital, a TV report said Friday.
Thursday’s attack - which has stunned the Dutch nation - was captured on film, as the small black car burst through a barrier at high speed, hitting 17 people, killing three men and two women.
The driver of the car, named only as Kars T., died in a hospital, according to Dutch state broadcaster NOS.
Twelve people were seriously injured in the incident.
The 38-year old Dutch national confirmed to police before he died that he intended to attack the royal family.
Police investigators, who have searched the car and his home, believe he acted alone.
Thursday was a national public holiday in the Netherlands, and Queen Beatrix, accompanied by other royals, was travelling through the town of Apeldoorn, 90 km east of Amsterdam, in an open top bus when the attack occurred.
