June 25, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): A doctor from Kansas along with his wife was convicted by the Federal court on Thursday. The charges brought against them were that of conspiracy. Stephen Schneider and his wife Linda had, apparently, been giving illegal prescriptions to their patients. Records reveal that 68 patients have died of overdosing so far. Overmedication by pain killers had also been a trait of the doctor and his wife.

The courts found the doctor guilty on 19 counts and Linda of 32. The total number of charges against them had been 34. Conspiracy along with illegal prescriptions of narcotics and money laundering were some of the gravest charges against them. Their clinic had been located in Haysville which lies just south of Wichita. The judge accused them of catering to the narcotic addicts via a ‘pill mill’ conspiracy.

The Schneiders, on the other hand, said that they had been running a normal and legitimate medical practice but may have been duped by some of their patients who were addicts.

The couple has two adopted daughters from Romania who were found weeping on hearing the verdict. The attorney, Lawrence Williamson, who is representing the Schneiders also described the doctor and his wife as being stunned after hearing the verdict of the court. He also said that the jurors must have been influenced by the publicity given to case even before it went on trial. He categorically denied that his client was guilty and promised to go for an appeal.

Robert Wick, the husband of one of the patient’s who had died of an overdose praised the verdict saying that they have been vindicated. The Assistant Attorney handling the case, however, refused to comment on the outcome.
