Discovery’s last mission extended by a day
March 4th, 2011 - 11:59 am ICT by IANSWashington, March 4 (IANS/RIA Novosti) The Discovery space shuttle will undock from the International Space Station (ISS) a day later than previously planned, NASA has said.
“Space shuttle and International Space Station managers decided to extend the STS-133 mission by an additional day, providing more time for the shuttle crew to help unpack and outfit the Leonardo Permanent Multipurpose Module and fill the Japanese Kounotori2 H-II Transfer Vehicle with trash,” the space agency said on its website.
The spacecraft is scheduled to undock from the space station at 1203 GMT Monday, March 7, and will take two days to return to Earth, and finally land at the Kennedy Space Centre March 9.
STS-133 is Discovery’s 13th and final docking at the space station. After this mission, the shuttle will be retired and placed in a museum.
Discovery has flown 38 missions till date - more than any other shuttle - and made more than 5,600 trips around the Earth.
