Didier Drogba’s family home in Ivory Coast torched
April 15th, 2011 - 1:15 pm ICT by ANIYamoussoukro, Apr 15 (ANI): Houses belonging to footballer Didier Drogba’s family in the Ivory Coast have reportedly been torched by rebel forces.
Some reports have suggested the entire village of Guiberoua, where the Chelsea striker’s father lives, had been set alight, while other reports claimed that Drogba’s own villa in Abidjan was targeted, The Sun reports.
It is also believed that Drogba’s family were targeted because they shared the same Bete tribal background as deposed dictator Laurent Gbagbo.
Although Gbagbo’s European adviser Alain Toussaint has claimed that: “His house was ransacked and vandalised on Monday,” but other sources denied that the 33-year-old star owned any property in the country.
Drogba was born in the West African country but moved to France when he was five-years-old.
Last month, he had made a public call to fighters to lay down their arms and end the bloody civil war.
Gbagbo was ousted earlier this week after months of fighting. At least 1,500 people have been killed and a million forced from their homes in the conflict between the tyrant and rival Alassane Ouattara. (ANI)
