Dhaka honours Tagore music exponents
May 7th, 2010 - 3:29 pm ICT by IANSDhaka, May 7 (IANS) Veteran Rabindra Sangeet exponents Kalim Sharafi and Sanjida Khatun have been named as the recipients of the annual Rabindra Awards instituted in the honour of Indian Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
The awards were instituted by the Bangla Academy, Bangladesh’s apex cultural body, to honour exponents and researchers working on Tagore’s artistic legacy ahead of his 149th birth anniversary, The Daily Star said Friday.
Sharafi, who is president of Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha, will receive the award for his contribution in promoting and preserving Rabindra Sangeet, while Sanjida Khatun, president of Chhayanaut, will receive it for her research on Tagore songs.
Both the exponents are iconic figures in the country for playing an important role in the revival of Tagore songs during the 1971 freedom movement.
