Washington, Nov 27 (IANS) Inspired by Batman’s comic book capers, a new device will enable sailors and soldiers to ascend walls with the panache of the super hero.

Funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) TechSolutions programme, the Powered Rope Ascender (PRA) is designed for use in urban combat and cave exploration.

The hand-held climbing tool allows infantrymen and sailors to ascend and descend vertical surfaces at the rate of six feet per second, according to an ONR statement.

The technology — compact and run on a rechargeable battery — can help naval teams in boarding ships and help chopper rescue crews evacuate casualties, among other applications.

The device will be highlighted during a “Modern Marvels” episode called “Weird Machines” to be telecast by the History channel Monday.
