Dancer-actress Amala Shankar feted in DhakaFebruary 18th, 2009 - 2:06 pm ICT by IANS
Dhaka, Feb 18 (IANS) Yesteryear’s dancer-actress Amala Shankar, who starred in her husband Uday Shankar’s film “Kalpana”, was feted here along with ten local artistes.
Amala was born in 1929 in a village of Narail district, then part of Greater Jessore in undivided India and now in Bangladesh.
Sent to Paris at the age of 11 for a cultural show, she met Uday Shankar, received training under him and they married in 1942.
Overwhelmed by the cordial reception, Amala Shankar, said: “I’ve received many awards and felicitations around the world, but this is a heartening experience to receive so much love from the people of my country of origin. I feel like that little girl from a small village who is just taken aback to receive such an honour.”
“I’ve just been sincere to my art, and practised it with passion. The art of dancing is not just for mere entertainment; it is the language of the life itself. If you are to express yourself with this language, you have to understand it, and feel it within your heart,” The Daily Star quoted her as saying.
