Cuba, Arab League sign cooperation pact
January 20th, 2010 - 1:08 pm ICT by IANSCairo, Jan 20 (IANS/EFE) Cuba and the Arab League have signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation here, the island nation’s deputy foreign minister said.
“It has been a very productive visit,” Marcos Rodriguez Costa said Tuesday after meeting at the league’s Cairo headquarters with Secretary-General Amr Moussa.
“The Arab League has always taken an interest in the situation of our region and our country,” the Cuban diplomat said.
He noted that representatives from Havana took part in Arab League summits during Cuba’s recent term in the presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement.
While in Cairo, Rodriguez also met Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and they discussed a “great variety of issues”, including bilateral ties, the visiting official said.
Rodriguez said he and Gheit also talked about global politics in the context of Egypt’s current tenure in the NAM presidency.
“It’s very important for Cuba to exchange viewpoints with the Arab country, it has been a very positive conversation, we touched on many issues: the United Nations, climate change, the situation of the Arab countries, of Latin America and of Cuba,” Rodriguez said.
