Crowd gives sexism-row referee Massey unwelcoming chants on return to Premier League
February 14th, 2011 - 3:34 pm ICT by ANISydney, Feb 14 (ANI): Assistant referee Sian Massey, who became a subject of a sexism scandal over Sky News presenters’ comments during a game between Wolverhampton and Liverpool last month, has reportedly faced unwelcoming chants for the first time after her return to the Premier League.
Football broadcasters Richard Keys and Andy Gray had to quit their jobs last month after being caught off air making disparaging remarks about Massey before she ran the line for Liverpool against Wolverhampton.
Messay had made a low-key return to action for a fourth-tier match last weekend, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The paper quoted Blackpool manager Ian Holloway as saying that he did not like the “There’s only one Andy Gray” comment from the crowd.
Last month, Keys had resigned from his 500,000 pounds-a-year job over the sexism scandal after admitting that he had behaved in a ‘prehistoric’ way towards women. He had earlier made a public apology for his derogatory comments about Massey and another official West Ham United executive Karren Brady.
“I am deeply sorry for my remarks and for the offence they’ve caused. It was wrong and should not have happened. I have thought long and hard and have reached the decision that it is time to move on,” he had said.
Gray was suspended over his remarks. (ANI)
