Court suspends operation of Sri Lankan pro-opposition website ‘LankaeNews’
April 29th, 2011 - 2:53 pm ICT by ANIColombo, Apr 29 (ANI): A magistrate’s court in Sri Lanka has suspended the operation of the pro-opposition ‘LankaeNews’ till proceedings against journalist Shantha Wijesooriya is over.
The court asked telecom regulators to suspend the website, ignoring an apology that it had made before the arrest of Wijesooriya.
The journalist has been remanded in custody until May 12 over one of his articles against a magistrate, which was regarded as slanderous, the BBC reports.
LankaeNews is currently not available inside Sri Lanka, but is accessible outside of the country.
The website has been facing attacks and threats since the presidential election in January 2010, and its chief editor Bennett Rupasinghe has been in exile since then. (ANI)
