Ithaca, Mar 27, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The suicides of a few of its students in Cornell University premises have prompted the university authorities to step up the safety measures. This week the authorities set up fences over three bridges falling in its premises that cover gorges in its campus. In recent times, three university students killed themselves by jumping into these places. The university authorities also have plans to erect fences on three more bridges on its campus and the officials are reportedly in talks with the administration of Ithaca city. Among the three students who took their lives by jumping into the deep gorges, the body of one is yet to be found.
The University officials also said that they have plans to replace the temporary barriers with permanent ones in the coming days. However, it may prove to be a time consuming affair. The university officials were shell shocked when two of the suicides took place on consecutive days. The psychologists associated with the Behavioral Health and Academic Counseling for University Health Services think that it is a really alarming trend among the students. They think it is equally important to step up student counseling services.
The university officials are on alert after the recent suicides rocked the campus. The university does not have many records of student suicides after 2005 and the recent mishaps seem all the more worrying. The parents of the students of the university have also become tensed after the suicides. However, erecting fences alone will not help to battle the increasing trend of suicides among the students. Robust counseling and community building can tackle the trend to an extent.
