Cop, two militants killed in Russia
March 18th, 2012 - 5:33 pm ICT by IANSMoscow, March 18 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A police officer and two militants were killed in an operation Sunday in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus region.
Two policemen were injured in the special operation in Dagestan, the investigation department said.
Police launched the operation against a house in Novosasitly village where a group of militants was hiding.
Russia has been battling Islamist insurgency in the region. Dagestan, which borders Chechnya, has seen around half of all militant attacks in Russia in the past two years.
According to official data, Dagestan registered 96 militant attacks on police officers and 100 gunbattles between police and militants in 2011.
