Conclusion of Doha Round will strengthen recovery: Sharma
May 28th, 2010 - 9:55 pm ICT by IANSParis/New Delhi, May 28 (IANS) India has sought an an early conclusion of the Doha Round of trade talks, saying this will strengthen the global economy which has just recovered from deep recession.
“An early conclusion of the Doha Round is essential to strengthen global economic recovery from the deep recession in several parts of the world,” said Commerce Minister Anand Sharma in Paris, where he attended the annual ministerial meeting of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries.
He also said greater economic cooperation among nations was no longer an option but a necessity in the context of the rapidly changing global economic environment.
Sharma also attended an informal meeting of trade ministers convened by Australia in which ministers and senior officials from 20 countries were present, according to an official statement.
He held detailed consultations with his counterparts from other countries to find a way out of the stalemate in the Doha Round negotiations of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), which have been stuck on the issue of safeguards to farmers in developing countries against import surges since 2008.
“The ministers have agreed to intensify their political dialogue to speed up the negotiations,” Sharma said, adding that the developing countries play an important role in guiding the process of globalisation to make it more inclusive and sustainable.
“In this context it is essential to review the architecture of global governance to provide an appropriate role for the developing world,” he added.
