Colombian navy seizes 2.5 tonnes of cocaine
November 5th, 2009 - 8:12 am ICT by IANSBogota, Nov 4 (EFE) Colombia’s navy Wednesday seized 2,219 kg cocaine off the Andean nation’s Pacific coast, authorities said, adding that a US Coast Guard vessel aided in the seizure.
The operation, which was carried out 100 km from Bahia Solano, got under way after naval units detected the presence of a boat with six crewmembers on board that was heading for the North Pacific.
The cocaine, which authorities said was ready to be transferred onto another vessel which was to take it to Central America, was valued at more than $66 million, the navy said.
The navy turned over the drug and the six men who had been on board the intercepted boat to the Attorney General’s Office.
So far this year, the Colombian navy has seized more than 90 tonnes of cocaine. Colombia is the world’s leading producer of the illegal drug.
