Bogota, March 20 (IANS) Colombia’s largest leftist insurgency group has said their leader Raul Reyes was killed by the US Army’s Southern Command in a military operation in the Ecuadorian jungles March 1, Spain’s EFE news agency reported Thursday. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) Wednesday told television network Telesur the operation was jointly conducted by the US and Colombian troops.
It said Reyes, the second in command of the group, “was killed in a military operation carried out by the US Army’s Southern Command and Colombian security forces inside the Ecuadorian territory, which was a flagrant violation of the international law and sovereignty of a sister republic”.
According to FARC, besides Reyes, 27 people, including 17 of his bodyguards were killed in the air and ground assault.
The attack was carried out at a FARC camp two km inside the Ecuadorian territory across the Colombian border.
