Colombia intercepts smugglers with anti-aircraft ordnance
December 16th, 2009 - 1:35 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Bogota, Dec 16 (EFE) Four Ecuadorian women who were trying to smuggle anti-aircraft ordnance into Colombia have been arrested, police said.
The women had entered the country illegally at Ipiales, a town on Colombia’s southern border with Ecuador, and boarded a bus bound for the city of Cali.
The arrests were made Monday night, according to the police chief in Cauca province, Col. Carlos Ernesto Rodriguez.
The foreigners were in possession of 1,366 rounds for Russian-made PKM machine guns.
Rodriguez said that “that is a powerful firearm used to shoot at air force, police and army combat aircraft”.
It is also used “to support personnel in land combat”, added Rodriguez, who did not rule out that the ammunition could have been destined for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, the country’s largest rebel group.
