Climate change worries young Russians leastOctober 26th, 2008 - 1:59 pm ICT by IANS
Moscow, Oct 26 (RIA Novosti) Young Russians are less concerned than their counterparts in other countries, including India, over climate change issues, according to a new United Nations survey. Four hundred young people in the age group of 12-18 years were surveyed in Russia, Brazil, India, the United States and South Africa.
In Brazil, the highest number of respondents - 96 percent - said they were concerned over climate change, while the figure for Russia at 70 percent was the lowest.
One slot above Russia sits the United States with 82 percent expressing concern of environment degradation.
In India, 77 percent of the respondents were encouraged by their leaders’ responses. In Russia the figure was 40 percent.
Just 12 percent of South Africans, 18 percent of Americans and 22 percent of Brazilians surveyed thought enough was being done on the climate front.
The survey was conducted online earlier this month, and although the margin of error cannot be assessed, the press release said it was “representative of the online community of youth.”
