London, Nov 22 (IANS) Manchester City’s new owners Abu Dhabi United Group is attempting a world-record $74 million bid to sign Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.A delegation from club travelled to Turin this month to discuss a possible transfer despite protests from Juventus, who are not willing to let go Buffon, who is now considered as the best goalkeeper in the country, The Guardian reported.

But City officials feels that neither Juventus nor the player can afford to refuse the record deal.

City’s wealthy Arab owners are on a spending spree at a time when other English clubs have tightened their purse due to the global meltdown.

City recently broke the British transfer record by signing Brazilian Robinho from Real Madrid for a record $50 million, Sept 1. This was the same day when the group bought the club from former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

City manager Mark Hughes is fully aware of the bid to sign Buffon despite his initial misgivings about the prospect of having big-name players in the team. But Hughes is believed to have high regard for Italy’s World cup winning goalkeeper.
