Church leaders compare climate disasters to Christ crucifixtion

Melbourne, Apr 22(ANI): The Japan crisis, the Christchurch devastation and the floods that ravaged Queensland were not the work of God, church leaders have said in their Easter message.

The Moderator of the Uniting Church Synod of NSW and ACT, the Reverend Niall Reid, said climate change was the result of “unsustainable, unfettered and unthinking addiction to economic growth”, and those who could not entertain a less destructive path were like those who sent Jesus to the Cross for expediency’s sake.

“God is found in the lives of those who seek remedies and work towards God’s vision of a reconciled and renewed creation,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Reid, as saying.

“Surely in our time [God's] vision is most threatened by climate change, which the science seems to be telling us is caused by human activity,” he added.

The Catholic Bishop of Parramatta, Anthony Fisher, said Christians must conclude that disasters such as storms or earthquakes were not acts of God.

“Where is God amidst these tragedies? With the victims, primarily, but also with those who respond with divine pity, and come to rescue and to care,” Fisher said.

“We see the risen Lord digging desperately amongst the rubble, trying to save whom he can and proclaiming hope once more to all,” he added. (ANI)
