Chinese microblogs closed for spreading porn
November 1st, 2011 - 5:53 am ICT by IANSBeijing, Nov 1 (IANS) China has shut down 50 microblogs for distributing pornography and vulgar content, an official said.
The microblogs were closed for violations including carrying pornographic images and videos, information for prostitution as well as illegal advertising for sex-related drugs and products, an official from the State Internet Information Office told Xinhua.
Chinese law prohibits all forms of pornography, prostitution and sex-related content in public media and the internet.
The official said members of the public reported the microblogs, which were then investigated and closed by the authorities.
Till June, China had about 500 million internet users. The country launched a crackdown on internet and mobile phone-based pornography in 2009.
