April 15th, 2010 - 8:06 am ICT by IANSChongqing (China), April 15 (IANS) A Chinese court has sentenced a former deputy police chief to death after he was found guilty of protecting organised crime gangs, accepting bribes and rape, a media report said Thursday.
Chongqing Intermediate People’s Court passed the sentence Wednesday against Wen Qiang, China Daily reported.
Wen, 55, was appointed director of the Chongqing municipality’s justice bureau. He was also a deputy director of the Chongqing public security bureau 1997-2008.
“Death for Wen is justice served. We are satisfied,” Wang Meng, one of the local residents who watched the court proceedings, said.
Wen confessed to taking bribes from five organised crime gangs between 2003 and 2008, and involvement in crimes ranging from gambling, prostitution and drug trade.
The court heard Wen had accepted bribes totalling 12.11 million yuan ($4.49 million) and abused his power to help people secure promotions illegally or win business bids.
Wen was also found guilty of raping a girl. In 2007, Wen instructed his men to get a girl drunk and then raped her in a hotel room.
The court ordered the confiscation of Wen’s personal properties and also deprived him of political rights for life.
