China’s elderly population reaches 178 mn

China is the world’s most populous country with a population of 1.34 billion.
Peoples Daily said the ageing population was 13.26 percent of the total, which is 3 percent higher than in 2000, according to the latest population census.
An annual statistical report revealed that a total of 257 million urban residents joined endowment insurance, 22 million more than in 2009.
The number of elderly welfare agencies has also gone up by 233 to 39,904.
