Kunming, Yunnan (China)/ Onboard, Apr 9 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has said Beijing understands New Delhi’s desire to take on a greater role in global development and in the restructuring of the UN.

Krishna, who spoke while on his way back from a four-day visit to China, halted in Kunming and met Qin Guangrong, the Governor of Yunnan province.

Speaking to reporters later onboard, Krishna said he was satisfied with the outcome of his talks with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi and Premier Wen Jiabao.

“We (India and China) represent two countries where things are beginning to happen about which the world has taken note of. Hence, with this backdrop we have been able to exchange views with the leadership and I am totally satisfied with the outcome of my talks with the Foreign Minister, honourable Yang Jiechi and also recalled (the talks) that I had with Wen Jiabao, the Premier,” said Krishna.

Krishna said that the restructuring of the United Nations was high on the agenda of his visit.

“China understands the desire of India to play an increasing role in the global development and China understands India’s desire for restructuring of the United Nations Organisation and its various agencies in order to reflect the contemporary realities as they have emerged in the last few years. So that has been well taken,” he said.

Krishna, during his talks with Yang Jiechi on Wednesday had called on China to review its opposition to India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

“China’s commitment will have to be looked into by the parallel happenings in the United Nations Organisation headquarters itself where more than 130 countries have (got) together so that there would be broadbased reorganisation of the United Nations itself. So I think we will have to juxtapose these two developments and then we will, we are hopeful, I am optimistic that these two developments taken together will certainly augur well for India’s entry into the Security Council,” noted Krishna.

The world’s two most populous nations, putting aside their lingering border dispute, are putting the global financial crisis behind them more quickly than developed countries, and want to build on a decade of commercial growth that has pushed China to the top of India’s list of trade partners. (ANI)
