China to play more active role in UN affairs
September 23rd, 2010 - 8:28 pm ICT by IANSUnited Nations, Sep 23 (IANS) China would play a more active role in the affairs of the UN and would try to strengthen its partnership with the international organisation, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has said.
During a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Wednesday, Wen said China has maintained coordination with the UN to combat many global challenges such as climate change as well as other international and regional issues, China Daily reported Thursday.
China would help promote the UN’s role in international affairs and continue to support the UN chief, Wen said.
He said it was of vital significance to hold the UN summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). With new challenges brought by the global financial crisis, the realisation of MDGs is crucial to help the developing countries stay confident about their own development.
Ban, meanwhile, spoke highly of China’s efforts to slash poverty and promote sustainable development.
The UN chief congratulated the Chinese premier on the successful hosting of the World Expo in Shanghai, and said he was looking forward to attending the event.
