Beijing, March 7 (IANS) China has sent a special envoy to Syria to discuss and find out a solution to the political crisis in the country, Xinhua reported.

Li Huaxin, after his arrival Tuesday at the Syrian capital Damascus, said his visit was part of China’s “positive and constructive” efforts to find a peaceful solution to Syria’s crisis.

The aim of his visit was to discuss with Syrian officials ways to peacefully settle the crisis, Li said.

The Chinese foreign ministry has issued a statement for the political resolution on the Syrian issue. It called for ceasing all acts of violence, launching an inclusive political dialogue, supporting humanitarian relief efforts and respecting Syria’s sovereignty.

It said that UN Security Council members should abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the basic norms governing international relations.

“China does not approve of armed interference or pushing for ‘regime change’ in Syria, and believes that use or threat of sanctions does not help to resolve this issue appropriately,” the ministry said.

“We oppose anyone interfering in Syria’s internal affairs under the pretext of humanitarian issues,” it said.

The government has said that “armed terrorist groups” have killed more than 2,000 army and security personnel, while the UN said that over 7,500 people have died in Syria’s violence.
