China, Norway to boost military ties
June 8th, 2010 - 3:49 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, June 8 (IANS) Visiting Norwegian Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Haakon Bruun-Hassen Tuesday met Chief of the General Staff of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) General Chen Bingde here to discuss military ties, Xinhua reported.
“The military relationship is an important part of China-Norway relations, and in recent years, the two sides have maintained frequent high-level exchanges and cooperation,” Gen Chen said.
Admiral Hassen said Norway would maintain the one-China policy.
Military contacts between the two countries started in the 1980s. In 1984, General Sven Hauge, the Norwegian Chief of Defence, visited China, and Xu Xin, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the PLA, headed a Chinese military delegation to Norway. This was the first time that military leaders from the two countries exchanged visits.
In April 2002, General Chi Haotian, Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission, State Councillor and Minister of National Defence, visited Norway.
