Beijing, July 30 (IANS) China has almost doubled the compensation to 915,000 yuan ($143,000) for the relatives of those killed in last week’s devastating train crash.

The compensation has been raised from 500,000 yuan to 915,000 yuan ($143,000). This one-off aid is expected to help cover the living expenses of the victims’ children, China Daily reported Friday.

The money will be paid to the families of all those killed in the accident. Those who already received the previous offer will also be compensated as per the revised amount.

However, the railways ministry is yet to determine a compensation package for those injured.

A high-speed train last Saturday rammed into the rear of a stationary train in Wenzhou city in eastern Zhejiang province, killing 40 people. The crash, one of the worst train accidents since 2008, left about 200 people injured.
