Beijing, Sep 5 (IANS) China Monday denied it had sold arms to Libya’s embattled Muammar Gaddafi regime, Xinhua reported.

China has always taken a responsible and prudent attitude toward arms trade and did not export military materials to Libya, said a foreign ministry spokeswoman Monday.

The ministry, however, admitted that the Gaddafi regime had contacted some Chinese companies.

The Gaddafi regime did contact individuals from certain Chinese companies in July without the knowledge of the government, but the companies didn’t sign any arms contracts or export military materials to Libya, the spokeswoman stated during a press briefing.

She stressed that any exports of military materials would need to be approved by authorised government departments.

The Chinese government strictly implemented the UNSC Resolutions 1970 and 1973 and Chinese companies didn’t provide military material to Libya directly or indirectly after the passage of Resolution 1970, she added.
