Beijing, Jan 16 (IANS) China and the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) will “deepen pragmatic cooperation” in the South China Sea, foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said Monday.

Liu was responding to media queries about the fourth meeting between the two sides Saturday on the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC) in South China Sea, China Daily reported.

Liu said both sides have agreed that peace has generally been maintained in the South China Sea and they reached a consensus on implementing efforts under the DOC framework.

Liu added that ASEAN has appreciated China’s 3-billion-yuan ($476 million) China-ASEAN maritime cooperation fund and hopes it will further promote the implementation of the DOC.

Both sides also discussed a timetable for DOC implementation in 2012, he said, adding that both sides agreed to hold a series of symposiums on this.
