Santiago, Jan 8 (IANS) A Chilean man disguised his girlfriend as his octogenarian grandmother in an attempt to steal some $82,000 the older woman kept in a bank account. But the plan was uncovered and both were arrested, police said Wednesday. The attempted robbery occurred in the southern port city of Talcahuano, 531 km from here, EFE news agency reported.

Commercial engineering student Konrad Scaracci Puccio, 32, convinced his 21-year-old girlfriend to wear a latex mask and other accessories to try and fool the bank employees so that she could withdraw the cash.

Prior to the attempted robbery, the grandson falsified the identity card of his grandmother, Silvia Elvira Lopez, who is currently in Venezuela, and also accessed two documents in which she had made bank deposits of 52 million pesos ($82,000).

The bank employees, while verifying the identity card data, discovered that Lopez was out of the country and realised that a robbery was afoot. They were then arrested.
