Chicago, Dec 23, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The fire that broke out in a building along the South Side of the city of Chicago on Wednesday seemed to be quite a routine affair for the Chicago Fire Department. However, as the firefighters were trying their best to control the blaze, things took a tragic turn when the roof and a wall of the building collapsed on them trapping four of them. After the firefighters were rescued from the debris, they were immediately rushed to a nearby medical but later two workers of the Chicago Fire Department succumbed to their injuries.
The firefighters who lost their life during Wednesday’s tragedy have been identified as Cory Ankum, 38 who had joined the Chicago Fire Department less than two years ago after his long association with the city police. The firefighter whose unfortunate demise is being mourned by his family as well as colleagues in the fire department, is survived by his wife as well as three children. The other fire department worker who died due to the injuries sustained in the incident has been identified as Edward Stringer who was assigned to the Engine Company 63 and was doing the job for past 12 years.
Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff revealed to the media outlets in a news conference that apart from the two firefighters who succumbed to their injuries, four firefighters were taken to the medical facility in a critical condition while ten of them were admitted so that preliminary treatment could be administered to them. In a rather uncanny coincidence, Wednesday marked the 100th anniversary of the Chicago Stock Yards fire in which left as many as 21 firefighters dead.
