Raipur, Nov 10 (IANS) A senior police officer was injured late Monday when suspected Maoist guerrillas attacked his vehicle in a thick forested hamlet of Chhattisgarh, the police said.B.S. Marawi, inspector general (IG) of police, Surguja range, sustained bullet injuries and is out of danger, according to the police.
The Maoist strike comes ahead of two-phased election in the state that starts Nov 17.
The incident took place in Surguja district close to the Jharkhand border, some 420 km north of the capital Raipur.
“Maoists opened fire targeting Marawi when he was on way back to Ambikapur (Surguja district headquarters) in a vehcile along with other officials after a border meeting with Jharkhand Police officials,” Pawan Deo, deputy inspector general, told IANS.
Marawi was rushed to district hospital in Ambikapur, Deo said.
According to police sources, Marawi will be brought to Raipur by a chopper Tuesday morning for advanced treatment.
