Puerto Rico, Jan 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The whistleblower who ensured that the bad manufacturing practices of GlaxoSmithKline’s Cidra plant in Puerto Rico was brought to the fore has appeared on the 60 Minutes show.

Cheryl Eckard who served as the quality control inspector at the plant literally said that there was no quality at the plant to be observed. She recalled that when she first realized the problem at the plant in 2002, she informed the VP of North America’s GlaxoSmithKline but nothing was done about the situation.

She chronicled that among the tall list of non compliance was the use of contaminated water for the production of the various medications. She also said that products were being filled into the wrong bottles and there was contamination from the employees. She claimed on the show that none of the quality control systems were ever followed at the plant.

These problems caused her to suggest that the plant be closed and the processed based halted so that the FDA can do thorough analysis.

When that was rejected as well, she decided to go out with it and it resulted in the shutting down of the plant as well as the out of court settlement of more than $750 million.
