Cherie Blair is president of the Loomba Trust that looks after widows around the world.
“Single women, especially widows, who run households require a support structure and assistance in discharging their domestic responsibilities and in gaining access to education, training and employment,” Cherie Blair said.
“Governments have a role to play in ensuring sufficient resources and priority is given to these most vulnerable members of society,” she added.
“United Nation’s specific millennium development goals to reduce extreme poverty, provide universal primary education and reduce mortality and improve maternal health will not be met if the world continues to ignore the increasing numbers of widows and their children in the world,” she told reporters here.
The former British first lady, along with actress Preity Zinta also revealed that she would like to visit places like Varanasi that have a huge population of widows.
