Chavez to visit Russia for military shopping
August 18th, 2009 - 8:57 am ICT by IANSCaracas, Aug 18 (Xinhua) The purchase of Russian tanks will be among the several agreements to be signed between Moscow and Caracas during the visit of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez in September, according to media reports.
Local media reports quoted Chavez as saying Monday that the purchase of the tanks was part of a modernisation plan for the National Bolivarian Armed Forces of Venezuela.
Chavez, however, denied his Russia trip signalled Venezuela’s intention to attack Colombia over the latter’s planned military agreement with the US, saying those claims “are a media campaign” launched by opposition political groups.
“This trip has been planned since the beginning of the year, but now we have much more important reasons to step up cooperation,” he said.
Chavez said that “the Empire’s (US) plan” is to make Venezuela and Colombia clash.
Chavez said Venezuelan Vice President Ramon Carrizalez had already spent three days in Russia arranging the agreements.
He said he would also visit Belarus, Libya, Iran and Syria to discuss cooperation on energy, technology, the economy and military.
