Charles Dickens’ incomplete ‘Edwin Drood’ to get new ending
January 25th, 2011 - 5:01 pm ICT by ANILondon, Jan 25 (ANI): 140 years after the death of Charles Dickens, his incomplete book ‘The Mystery Of Edwin Drood’ is about to get a new ending.
Writer Gwyneth Hughes has completed Dickens’s vision of the novel that will be screened as a BBC drama later this year.
Dickens died in 1870, leaving the book midway. A brief outline of the plot was relayed to his friend and biographer John Forster.
The latest adaptation will also include a BBC One dramatisation of Great Expectations and Radio 4 versions of A Tale Of Two Cities and Martin Chuzzlewit.
‘Since the BBC’s first broadcast in 1922, a key part of our role has been to impart knowledge through programmes that inform, educate and entertain,” the Telegraph quoted BBC director of vision Jana Bennett as saying.
‘What better than to share the pages of our most treasured cultural asset with BBC audiences than through a year of programming that celebrates the BBC’s vast collection of books programmes, both historic and new.’ (ANI)
