Channel funds to Tamil schools, not NGOs, says Malay parent body
January 18th, 2010 - 3:47 pm ICT by ANIKlang (Malaysia), Jan.18 (ANI): Several people claiming to be Selangor Tamil Schools Parents Association members have lodged a police report, demanding to know why state allocation for Tamil schools has been channelled to three non-governmental groups.
Led by G. Jeganathan the group said the funds should instead be given directly to the Tamil schools.
“We want Dr Xavier Jayakumar, the executive councillor responsible for the disbursement of the funds, to explain to us why the money has to be given to the three groups,” The Star quoted Jeganathan, who claimed to be a committee member of the association’s Klang chapter, as saying.
Jeganathan said parents also wanted to know how the allocation had been spent by the NGOs and if all the Tamil schools in the state benefited from it.
He also alleged that the organisations - the Educational, Welfare and Research Foundation, Child Information, Learning and Development Centre and the Tamil Foundation - shared a common office and mailing address.
Selangor had given RM1.6mil to the organisations last June to upgrade the standard of education in 97 Tamil schools in the state.
All three have had a long and successful history of helping underprivileged Indian children. (ANI)
