Baghdad, March 3 (Xinhua) At least 12 people were killed and more than 40 injured when a car bomb went off in the central part of the Iraqi capital Monday, an interior ministry source said. “A car bomb parked near the communication centre of Bab al- Muadham neighbourhood detonated while an Iraqi army patrol was passing by, killing a soldier and 11 civilians,” the source said on condition of anonymity.
More than 42 civilians and four soldiers were injured in the blast, which also damaged one of the patrol vehicles, several nearby shops and some civilian cars, the official said.
The incidents came as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is paying a landmark visit to Baghdad, which is the first for an Iranian president since the country’s Islamic Revolution in 1979.
