Vancouver, March 18 (IANS) A Canadian Tamil has been arrested on charges of collecting funds for Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tigers. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested Prabaharan Thambithurai for targeting Sri Lankan Tamils of the Lower Mainland area here. He is to appear in court to face charges.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is banned as a terror organisation in Canada. Anyone who gives funds to a banned terror outfit can be jailed for 10 years and one who raises funds faces up to 14 years in prison.
LTTE supporters were very active in Canada till the Conservative government banned the outfit in 2006. The over 250,000 Sri Lankan Tamils in Canada form the largest concentration outside the island nation.
Media reports say that thousands of former LTTE guerrillas have also made Canada their home.
