Toronto, Oct 14 (IANS) Mystery surrounding the murder of a young Sikh woman and three newborn kids in Calgary last week deepened Tuesday, with police calling the case “complex and delicate”. They are not even saying if it was a murder.
Chandigarh-born Harsimrat Kahlon, 27, was found dead by her common-law husband Harnek Mahal in their suite last Sunday.

The term common-law husband refers to a partner who is not legally married to the woman.

When police came to the suite, they found the body of Kahlon who was alone at home.

They also discovered bodies of three newborns concealed in suitcases.

But police said clarified Tuesday that the bodies of the kids were discovered the next day when a relative of the woman found the body of a kid.

When police were called in again, they found the bodies of two more kids.

Police refused to say whether the three kids were born to Kahlon who was reportedly going to India to marry next month.

However, Inspector Guy Slater of the city crime branch revealed that hospital records show that Kahlon gave birth to a baby in 2005.

He said they don’t know whether the baby born in 2005 was among the three found dead.

The police inspector said they were waiting for forensic results to know whether the dead infants were related to Kahlon or her common-law husband.

“What we do know is that the circumstances and details leading up to the death of Simmi (Harsimrat) Kahlon and the three newborns will rely heavily on science to give us that understanding,” he said.

Kahlon, who came to Canada in 1999, was estranged from her family and staying with her common-law husband since 2006.

According to her brother Harpreet Kahlon, she had broken all links with her family when she moved out in 2005. He said the family knew nothing about her friends.

Kahlon worked at a local law firm.
