November 30th, 2009 - 8:44 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Dhaka, Nov 30 (IANS) Authorities in Canada have seized the passport of a former Bangladesh army officer convicted for killing the founder-president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, an official said here.
Major (Retd) Noor Chowdhury has been “illegally” living in Canada since his passport was seized in July last year. He has to report to police every week, Star Online reported quoting Law Minister Shafiq Ahmed.
Chowdhury is one of 12 people whose death sentence was confirmed by a bench of the Supreme Court Nov 19 for participating in the massacre of Rahman and a score of his family members and political associates Aug 15, 1975.
The law minister said he had a discussion with his Canadian counterpart about bringing Chowdhury back to Bangladesh.
He said Chowdhury earlier appealed to the Canadian government to permit him to stay in that country as a refugee but Canada has rejected his appeal.
Now Chowdhary is trying to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada for allowing him to remain in the country, the minister informed.
Chowdhury is among the six former Bangladesh military officers convicted and sentenced but living abroad for the last many years. Bangladesh authorities say these live in Pakistan, the US and Libya.
