Los Angeles, Aug 16 (IANS) Supermodel Naomi Campbell has been urged by a former child soldier to apologise for calling her appearance at the war crimes trial of ex-Liberian President Charles Taylor “a big inconvenience”.
Campbell took to the stand in The Hague, Netherlands, earlier this month to give evidence in Taylor’s war crimes trial. He is alleged to have given Campbell blood diamonds - illicit gems sold to finance conflicts - after a dinner party at Nelson Mandela’s home in South Africa in 1997.
During her testimony, Campbell told the courtroom how she had been forced to testify, telling the judge: “This is a big inconvenience for me”.
The comments sparked outrage, and now former child soldier Kabba Williams - who was forced onto the battlefield after his mother was killed - has blasted the catwalk queen for her comments, reports hollywood.com.
“She should be ashamed. It is more than inconvenient for the thousands wiped out and those tortured, raped or burned to death,” said Williams.
Taylor is accused of using blood diamonds to fund Sierra Leone’s 1991-2002 civil war. He has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges.
