jordan1 May 24, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): 13-year-old Jordon Romero from Big Bear, California, has become the youngest person to reach the top of Mount Everest. The eighth-grader said that he desires his accomplishment will give confidence to young people globally to dream big.

In a dialogue by satellite phone from the 21,320-foot Advanced Base Camp where his team had returned after reaching the top on Saturday, Romero stated that he wishes that his achievement will motivate children across the world to go outdoors and to establish objectives in life.

Jordon was able to climb the 8850 meter high peak on Saturday with a team that consisted of his father, his stepmother and three Sherpa guides. Previously the record of being the youngest climber belonged to Temba Tsheri of Nepal, who reached the peak at the age of 16.

Jordon’s trek was not without trouble. He had to endure a harsh stomach ache on the final ascent of the climb. But he mentioned that, when he came up to the summit, the pain just petered out and all he could experience was contentment.

The climb has brought Romero one more step closer towards reaching his goal of climbing the highest mountains on all seven continents. He had already climbed five peaks including Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, and needs to climb only Vinson Massif, the highest peak in Antarctica, to fulfill his ambition.
