Brussels cops foil bomb plot against UK PM BrownDecember 12th, 2008 - 11:00 am ICT by ANI
Brussels, Dec.12 (ANI): Police in Brussels have reportedly foiled a suicide bomb attack on British Prime Minister Gordon Brown by arresting fourteen suspected al-Qaeda terrorists here on Thursday.
According to The Sun, the sweep came just hours before a summit meeting between the heads of 27 EU countries in Brussels.
Brown was due to meet EU leaders.
One of the suspects is believed to be a suicide bomber mounting an operation “from which he was not expected to come back”.
It is thought a terror attack was being planned but the target has not been revealed.
Nearly 250 police officers raided 16 locations in the capital and one in the eastern city of Liege overnight. Computers, data storage equipment and a pistol were confiscated.
There was no other choice than to intervene today, federal prosecutor Johan Delmulle was quoted, as saying.
He added one suspect had recorded what looked like a martyrdom video, including a farewell message.
The raid and arrests led to helicopters being flown overhead and police guarding dozens of motorcades travelling to the summit cordon.
Britain’’s Prime Minister arrived this afternoon for the talks with other EU leaders, including French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Delmulle said it was unclear where the attack had been planned to take place.
The suspects had travelled to both Pakistan and Afghanistan, and it was possible the suicide bombing might have been drawn up there. (ANI)
