London, Dec 12 (ANI): Britons are the European leaders when it comes to social networking, according to a new report.
The study, from the regulator Ofcom, says that the UK leads Europe in using sites such as Facebook and MySpace, with two in five adult Brits regularly using such sites, most among them being women.
They devote 5.3 hours a month to social networking sites, visiting them an average of 23 times.
Almost 40 per cent of British adults with Internet access use social networking sites compared with 22 per cent in Italy, 17 per cent in France and 12 per cent in Germany, the study found.
According to the watchdog’s international communications market report, this percentage was higher than in America (34 per cent) and Japan (32 per cent).
The most popular website in all countries except for Japan was Google. Other sites included in the top 10 were Microsoft, eBay, Yahoo, Wikipedia, YouTube, the BBC and Apple.
The report showed that Britain was leading the digital revolution, with more households equipped with digital television than any other country.
By the end of 2006, 76 per cent of homes were digital compared with 61 per cent in America, 60 per cent in Japan, 53 per cent in France, 46 per cent in Italy and 45 per cent in Sweden.
The study also showed that digital radio is becoming increasingly popular in the UK, with one in five adults now owning a digital radio set.
More than half of households in 2006 had a broadband connection, putting the UK above America for the first time.
But only a fifth of customers said they were very satisfied with their broadband speed compared with 36 per cent in America and 30 per cent in German.
The results also showed that Britons were more wedded to traditional landline phone services than other countries.
Nearly two in five Italian homes and more than one in four Polish homes now use only mobiles for their phone calls, compared with a mere 13 per cent in Britain. (ANI)
