Britons growing cannabis in spare rooms

London, Sep 26 (IANS) Middle-class families in Britain are handing over their spare bedrooms to criminal gangs for growing cannabis crops, a media report said Monday.

Cannabis derivative in the form of marijuana is used as a drug. The UN says cannabis is the most widely used illicit substance in the world.

The families are making an income of up to 3,000 pounds ($4,650) a month by renting out their rooms, The Sun reported.

However, the report did not state the number of families involved or their location.

The new tactic reportedly began after police started to crack down on large-scale drug making factories by using heat-seeking helicopters to detect unusual surges caused by lighting systems necessary to grow cannabis quickly.

Now gangs prefer renting just one room and believe there is less chance of “respectable” families in affluent areas being busted, said a report from BBC 5 Live Investigates.
